23rd Triennale Milan International Exhibition. Unknown Unknowns. An Introduction to Mysteries – 15 July – 11 December 2022

The Triennale Milan International Exhibition is dedicated to design and architecture and sponsored by the Triennale in collaboration with the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. A constellation of exhibitions and projects brings together 400 artists, designers and architects from over 40 countries, with more than 600 works and 22 international participations.

The 23rd International Exhibition addresses the theme of the unknown, investigating the mysteries of the known world and presenting a space to reflect on “what we don’t know that we don’t know”. Unknown Unknowns. An Introduction to Mysteries offers a new look at the unknown and an opportunity for exploration. The unknown thus becomes a dimension to be experienced, a notion of astonishment in the face of the immensity of what escapes us.

La tradizione del nuovo

La Tradizione del Nuovo – this is the title of the new exhibition at the Italian Design Museum of the Triennale Milano – illustrates how Italian design has always explored with courage and dedication, making use of extensive research to address the as yet unknown. The exposition brings together works, installations, documents, creative processes and experiments that contributed to the development of society between 1964 and 1996, referencing the sociological, commercial, ecological, technological and cultural aspects.

The exhibition opens with an installation in which the concept of the door is reworked symbolically, taking up the main theme of the 23rd International Exhibition: the act of “crossing a threshold” represents the separation or communication between two environments, understood not simply as physical space but also as a passage between the known and the unknown.

The Design Museum opens a new chapter with a spin-off of the project “Invece del Campanello” (In place of the Doorbell), conceived in 1991 by Bruno Munari and Davide Mosconi, in partnership with Lualdi. An eclectic artist and designer, Bruno Munari’s creative activity was given over to experimentation, exploring all its forms to include painting, sculpture, design, photography and teaching.

The installation illustrates the essence of Munari’s thinking, accompanying us with a mixture of humor and exactitude, teaching us to shift the way we see things, even a little, and training us to assume a mental agility with which to navigate the world of modernity with ease.

Munari defined the ‘campanello’ (doorbell) as “the instrument to communicate auditory messages through the doors according to the character, mood, humidity and sensitivity of the people who ring the bell”. For the centenary of Munari’s birth in 2007, the exhibition was re-presented by Beppe Finessi in Lualdi’s Milan showroom, with fit-out by Marco Ferrer and embellished with previously unpublished documents.

Using a series of doors produced by Lualdi, Bruno Munari and Davide Mosconi applied devices and structures “in place of the doorbell” that produce the strangest and most diverse sounds in relation to the imagined owner of the door. For example, to ring the door of the geologist ‘Pietro di Pietra’ we use a knocker that strikes a stone plate. For that of the Head Physician ‘de Medici’, the Medici brass knocker, spring-loaded plunger, paper nametag.

The Design Museum selected six works, which will enhance the towers that make up the entrance portal.

ETHER: the doorway of the future

Changes in social behavior and habitation patterns, together with technological developments, have led to a new tradition in the appearance of the door as a physical object, transforming it within the context of new values where design becomes the fundamental and mindful interpreter. The door is one of those objects that has endured the longest over time. It is the quintessential intermediary object: able to establish the passage between Architecture and Interior.

ETHER, designed by Marco Piva for Lualdi, is an innovative door system equipped with an advanced door jamb: the vertical block, which accommodates an interface developed by Microdevice, an Italian company specializing in building automation & control systems, is fully incorporated and hidden within the door system.
The design thus becomes the tool that makes it possible to establish the connection with the public, offering an experience that is out of the ordinary.
A vision of the future that combines the know-how of Lualdi with the most advanced technologies, making them the key elements of uniquely designed creations.

The system incorporates an intelligent, highly-customizable interface with multiple commands that is able to evolve and adapt to the needs of the end user: it is configured through a simple data connection.

Finishes and accessories

Marco Piva and Lualdi have developed three versions with three different uses for the launch of ETHER. Each version comes with a package of finishes and accessories designed for a certain function type. The combinations of materials – wood, glass and aluminum – are specific to the different uses of the system.

The iconic combinations reveal a rich and harmonious program of aesthetic and material solutions, as is the custom with Lualdi products.

Lualdi at Salone del Mobile.Milano 2022

7-12 June 2022
Hall 5, Booth D11

Lualdi is taking part in Milan Design Week 2022 with a stand dedicated to the story of custom-made systems and furnishings and developed in continuity with the Milanese showroom concept.

The space, designed by Piero Lissoni, art director of the brand, becomes the setting for ever new stories. In this context, the partitions serve different functions, giving life to a sequence of environments in a sort of artistic labyrinth.
This choice not only allows the company to set the individual products in a realistic context within the exhibition space in order to demonstrate their functional and aesthetic aspects, but also enables it to experiment with finishes, styles and new combinations, testifying to the ability of the Lualdi products to influence and define synergistically the architecture of the spaces.

1 JUNE 2022

The exhibition layout thus guides the visitors along a path in which a story unfolds, enabling them to interact both physically and emotionally with the space. The storyline is enhanced with two new proposals for the occasion:

Teatro – La Bella

Teatro, designed for Lualdi by Andrea Boschetti, is a partition system that perfectly meets the needs of a contract and residential market requiring highly versatile and modular spaces.
With the La Bella version, presented for the Salone del Mobile 2022, the design is enhanced with geometric decorations and plays of solids and voids on the modules in natural wood. The succession of these doors gives rise to compositions that are always different.
La Bella is just one example of the innumerable ways this project can be customized, born as it was to create flexible and contemporary partition solutions that are suitable for the design of a variety of functional areas, from private residences to clubhouses, from executive business environments to entertainment spaces.

Skye

Skye is the system of fixed and sliding panels, designed for Lualdi by Piero Lissoni in 2021, which is now presented in a version that is composed entirely of wood, both the profiles and the doors. The system allows for multiple configurations, both in terms of the structure and in the selection of finishes.

Describing a door

The Lualdi showroom at Foro Buonaparte 74 in Milan reopens to the public as a new mono-brand space, the result of a restyling project by Piero Lissoni that brings to the fore the very modern and international soul of the company.

The location is the same, the former Olympia Theater, a cherished place for Milan in the early 1900s and one that has now been home to the Lualdi brand for many years.

And it is even more so for Lualdi, who have succeeded in reinventing spaces with doors and partition systems, creating new possibilities for interiors. By developing integrated solutions for architectures and conducting research on materials, Lualdi has managed to go beyond the traditional and codified process of door production, making it a unique reality with its own story.

“We felt the need for a space that could represent the company, one capable of bringing out the tradition and values that distinguish all our products – says Alberto Lualdi, CEO. “The goal was to communicate a real lifestyle concept that encapsulates what Lualdi has to offer, one based on that manufacturing flexibility that has always driven the company’s business”. A flexibility that translates into bespoke productions, personalized service and tailor-made solutions that over the years has enabled Lualdi to become a favored partner of architectural firms and allowed it to build a worldwide distribution network. Today, the brand stands out not only in the residential sector, but also in the field of large contract projects.

“We thought of the new showroom as an international showcase for the company’s products and philosophy – says Pierluigi Lualdi, Marketing Director and Head of the Contract Division. More than a space, an itinerary that narrates the Lualdi concept of living to all our stakeholders, with solutions that combine research, technology, craftsmanship and customization”.

The new mono-brand store is in fact part of a broader corporate strategy aimed at creating new spaces in principal cities worldwide, with the purpose of increasing the export share which has stood at around 65 percent over the last three years. “We are examining some locations in Italy and abroad – concludes Pierluigi Lualdi – that could be opened both directly and in partnership with our local distributors in order to consolidate our presence in our key markets of Asia, Russia and America, evaluating the possibility of expansion into new countries”.

And while Lualdi looks to the future in an international context, it also maintains its origins and its connection with Milan, the city to which it is intrinsically linked and to which it owes the origin of its success as Olga Lualdi, the  Communications Manager, explains: “Milan has a strongly symbolic value for the brand because our history as a design company began and developed thanks to the close relationship with those architects who were the driving force behind the city’s reconstruction that began in the 1950s, in particular Luigi Caccia Dominioni, the foremost exponent of that Milanese style that marked the history of design and architecture of the second half of the 20th century. Products such as the LCD62 or the Super door several years later are the perfect symbols of that industrial turning point which over the years has developed and evolved, so determining the company’s entry into the world of design”.

Welcome, the Philippe Starck collection for Lualdi

It’s called Welcome and it’s the first Lualdi collection by Philippe Starck.

Designed for hotels, the soul of the project consists of a system of accessories – handle, step marker and number, but also a tablet – which comes to life on the door. The door is then transformed into an actual service surface for the hotel guest, and can be used for facial recognition, room heating, welcome, protection and even to send messages.

Philippe Starck comments: “The door is a vital element that I use a lot in my projects. A door is not an object, it is a moment, an action, the beginning of a story. A door is always extraordinary because it unites two sides, two worlds. A door is a mystery, a drama, a work.”
